"Effective networking is helping others…first."

Short and sharp. I love this advice and will remember it. You get what you reap, offer your service first and without asking for anything in return, reciprocation and referrals will follow.

Anybody who says networking doesn't work obviously isn't doing it right! 85% of my real estate clients came through networking. Even on my blogs the majority of traffic has come from networking! Great points here :)

Very well said there Rebecca . ("',)

Networking (that is, in any area) can only be very effective and beneficial if people know how to apply the "law of reciprocity," as you have said, rather than just getting the benefits or results from it.

As in all areas of running a business networking first needs to be about providing value. When I social network I'm interested in meeting like minded people and making friends. One of the things that makes online networking so difficult is that not everyone is there for the same reason and many people are only interested in what they can get for themselves. In the end they're hurting their brand more than helping it.

Thanks for sharing this great article!. :-)

Thanks Grandy and Fruity for your comments.

Networking is almost always synonymous with relationship building. Unless one learns to build relationships, he will never benefit therefrom.

Well, maybe fruity. ^^,
