Know Thyself: Foundation of Corporate Leadership

“Control is not leadership; management is not leadership; leadership is leadership. If you seek to lead, invest at least 50% of your time in leading yourself—your own purpose, ethics, principles, motivation, conduct. Invest at least 20% leading those with authority over you and 15% leading your peers.” — Dee Hock, Founder and CEO Emeritus, Visa

The core foundation of leadership lies within you and knowing yourself. “A blind cannot lead another blind, they will both fall into a pit,” as the good book tells us. Very true. We are only qualified to lead if we are able to see within and without us. Without this knowledge, we become presumptuous. We pontificate. We lead others blindly, and lead them astray. Hock said it well. Today and more than ever, the corporate world thirsts for leaders who are not only aggressive professionals and competent managers but corporate leaders who know how to lead themselves.

How well do you know yourself? How do you lead?
